This report is about using Mind-Body Therapy to improve the outcome, and to obtain a longer and better quality of survival, from current medical treatment for Advanced Prostate Cancer. For example, a man who strongly believes in the success of a drug he is taking is likely to derive some 33 percent more benefit from the drug than a man who has no such opinion.

A Disease Of Older Men And Wildly Raging Hormones
Prostate Cancer (henceforth abbreviated to PC) is an age-related and hormone-dependent disease that promotes malignant tumors in the prostates of older men. Early stage PC, that has not spread outside the prostate capsule, is usually considered curable. PC tends to be slow-growing and up to 90 percent of all PC remains dormant and clinically harmless, often for decades. But if left untreated or unobserved, the PC cells may eventually break out of the prostate and spread to organs or bones in other areas of the body, a process called metastasis.
Once metastasis occurs, the disease is considered incurable and is known as Advanced Prostate Cancer (henceforth abbreviated to APC). We chose APC to demonstrate Mind-Body Therapy in this report because it is the most common type of incurable Cancer in American men.
Roughly 90 percent of the "fuel" that drives PC consists of the male hormone testosterone that is released by the testes. The remainder consists of the closely-related hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine plus cortisone. These are stress hormones released by the adrenal glands. And along with testosterone, all are known as androgens.
Medical treatment for APC usually begins with Hormone Therapy, administered every 3 months by injection and designed to deprive the prostate of the male hormone testosterone. The drug employed is usually Lupron and its effects last from 16-24 months, perhaps longer with Mind-Body Therapy. Lupron or similar drugs suppress production of testosterone, causing tumors to shrink or grow more slowly; and the drug controls pain and may keep APC at bay, or even in remission, for several years.
Significant slowing in the progress of APC is possible but eventually, cancer cells become resistant to Hormone Therapy. Anti-androgen drugs are then added to block the ability of APC to utilize androgens released by the adrenal glands. The result is a Total Androgen Blockade. That lasts until the cancer cells learn to live without androgens and begin to grow again, a condition known as being "Hormone Refractory."
All this may take several years or longer while new breakthrough drugs can often extend periods of wellness for 2-3 years each. One drug is used till it ceases to work. Then doctors switch to another drug, often buying years of productive living and a quality of life that may be better than that of other incurable diseases. Which isn't bad when you consider that many men have already lived into their late-seventies or eighties before they are diagnosed with APC or other types of cancer.
Men of this age frequently have other diseases--such as heart disease or type-2 diabetes--from which they die before APC becomes fatal. So it's often said that more men die with APC than from it. But treating another disease at the same time as treating APC may complicate the medical treatment for cancer. Having another disease at the same time as APC is called "co-morbidity."
Co-morbidity can be largely prevented, or even reversed, by modifying one's diet and lifestyle. Incidentally, one reason, we discovered, why some older men reach an advanced stage of PC before learning they have the disease, is that they are lifetime vegetarians or exercise buffs who believe they are so fit and healthy that they are immune to any form of Cancer. This works for most diseases like heart disease, Type-2 diabetes or hypertension that can be prevented or reversed by a healthy diet and exercise regime. But the underlying cause of PC is unresolved emotional stress, not high cholesterol or sedentary living. So even if you are superfit and healthy, we recommend taking a PSA test on a regular schedule, regardless of your age.
Unresolved Emotional Stress Is A Primary Cause Of Prostate Cancer
Most medical sources dismiss the cause of PC as "unknown: more research is needed." But in the winter of 2006-7, radical new discoveries revealed that exposure to stress hormones may accelerate the speed of Cancer growth. Scientists from Wake Forest University School of Medicine were the first to report that the stress hormone Norepinephrine causes degenerative changes in PC cells that make them resistant to medical treatment. The medical treatment in this case, was designed to cause cancer cells to self-destruct (aka aptosis).
Previous research had already shown that prolonged exposure to Norepinephrine increases risk of cancer metastasis, aids in growth of blood vessels that feed malignant tumors, and suppresses the immune system. All this left little doubt that Norepinephrine can contribute to the genesis of PC and can sabotage the effectiveness of medical treatment.
Above all, prolonged exposure to any of the adrenalin hormones can lead to premature aging of our body cells. For example, the cells of a man aged 60 who was exposed to prolonged stress might typically have a biological age of 75. Which means his risk for PC is equal to that of a man 15 years older. PC is a disease of older men. It's almost unknown before age 50. When the biological age of a man's cells is significantly higher than his chronological age, that man has a higher risk for PC.
Physicians often notice that almost every man with PC ( or women with breast cancer ) has undergone an extended period of stress earlier in life. Stress caused by an ugly divorce, a period of guilt or anxiety, or wartime stress, lack of health insurance or health care, racial discrimination, unforgiveness or anger, retirement, debt, relocation, unemployment, death of a spouse or other serious loss, all may involve prolonged exposure to Norepinephrine or other adrenal hormones.
(Premature aging may also be caused by Smoking or Chewing Tobacco; A Deficiency of Vitamin D3; Lack of Physical Activity; Being Overweight or Obese; Overuse of Alcohol or Other Drugs; and a Diet Low in Plant-Based Foods and Fiber and High in Animal Fats and Protein. Along with Growing Older, all work synergistically or alone to create premature aging in specific organs or common Cancer sites. The most common form of premature aging is shortening of telomeres that may lead to Breast Cancer in women; Prostate Cancer in men; Lung Cancer in smokers; Being Overweight, which intensifies risk of many cancers; Eating a diet high in red meat and low in plant-based, high-fiber foods; and experiencing a prolonged period of Emotional Stress. Having one or more of these risk factors does not guarantee you will get Cancer. But it does increase the risk.)
Premature aging weakens our cells and may lead to a pre-cancerous condition called Prostate Intra-Epithelial Neoplasm (PIN). It's not cancer but refers to the presence of abnormal cells that are likely to become malignant in future. PIN may appear in a man up to ten years before he is diagnosed with PC. It cannot be treated by standard medical treatment.
The more a man's cells age through exposure to stress hormones, the more prone he becomes to PC. That sounds as if men are at the mercy of their raging adrenal hormones. Yet we can restore calm and re-balance our hormones by using Mind-Body Therapy to re-program the thoughts and feelings in our minds.

Besides giving yourself a leg-up, this knowledge helps you to make intelligent choices, together with your urologist, about which drugs and treatment you will use. It also helps you to work as a partner with your doctor.
One thing you may learn is that any side effects from Hormone Therapy can be reduced by using the treatment intermittently. According to some sources, Intermittent Hormone Therapy may be used on and off for several years without needing total hormone blockage. For instance, loss of Bone Density --one of the side effects of Hormone Therapy--can be reduced by using the drugs intermittently instead of continuously. While this is something for your urologist to decide, it might easily be overlooked in the rush of an interview in your doctor's office. So it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor about it.
By the way, in browsing the Web while searching for these websites, we did not discover a single documented case of PC confirmed by biopsy that had been cured with herbs or detoxification or other unproven alternative therapies. At GOOD HEALTH WITHOUT DRUGS we're not enthusiastic about unnecessary drugs or medical treatment. But when it comes to PC or APC, we have to admit that medical treatment is the only thing that seems to work.

Cyclists Combating Cancer: a valuable site featuring the case history
of Damon Phinney, a Boulder CO cyclist who was diagnosed with PC at age
60. But after 18 months of Hormone Therapy, he achieved a remission that

STEP 2: VITAMIN D3 THERAPY-- For Better Outcomes and Survival In a Variety of Diseases
Vitamin D3 is a mild steroid hormone that is synthesized in the skin by exposure to sunlight. A cascade of new evidence is suggesting that D3 enhances health in a variety of ways, including inhibition of lung and colon cancer, and very possibly breast and prostate cancer. In many areas of medicine and health, men and women with the highest levels of Vitamin D3 have significantly better outcomes and survival than those with the lowest levels. Across the world, scientists are investigating Vitamin D3 as one of the most promising therapies in the fight against Cancer.
Actually, Vitamin D3 has two primary functions:-
1. It works as a catalyst to help Calcium maintain strong bones.
2. It provides vital support that can help guard against a host of age-related problems. Literally, scores of studies have demonstrated that D3 plus Calcium can improve bone mass and muscle strength. And it lowers risk of falling by improving balance and muscle performance.
In animals with cancer given D3, researchers have seen a dramatic decrease in tumor growth. D3 appears to inhibit cell degeneration, making cancer cells slower to proliferate, more likely to self destruct through aptosis, and less likely to build new blood vessels to feed malignant tumors, or to metastasize. It also boosts the competence of the immune system and lowers risk of auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Type-1 diabetes.
However, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, plus many other top health advisory agencies, have concluded that Vitamin D3 deficiency is widespread throughout the world as well as in the U.S., particularly in adults aged 50 or older. And a deficiency of D3 can be potentially devastating to your health.
That's partly because people have been over-cautioned about the dangers of skin cancer due to excessive sun exposure, and partly because in the temperate zones of the world, the amount of sunshine is too low in winter to synthesize D3 in the skin. For example, the threshold of D3 in the bloodstream for optimal bone health is 75-80 Nanomoles per Liter. But during winter in Boston, the average person has a D3 blood level of just 40 Nanomoles.
Having a dark skin also prevents absorption of D3 from sunlight, which appears to be borne out by the excessively high risk of PC in dark-skinned Americans.
The Solution? Some foods like milk have been fortified with Vitamin D but you can do a better job yourself by taking Vitamin D3 supplements plus supplemental calcium. Based on substantial research and the concensus of leading experts, the National Osteoporosis Foundation recently upgraded its recommendation for adequate daily D3 and Calcium intake to :-
1,200 mgs of Calcium per day for adults 50 and over
800-1,000 I.U. per day of Vitamin D3 for adults 50 and over
These levels are primarily for preventing bone density loss, which is a side effect of Prostate Cancer and medications for treating PC and APC. Unless you spend adequate time outdoors each day in sufficiently strong sunlight, taking the recommended levels of D3 and Calcium should be mandatory, especially for women. Blood tests for D3 levels are simple and inexpensive and your level should be at least 55 Ng/Ml or higher. If it isn't, you can increase it by taking 1,000 I.U. of supplemental D3 per day until you reach a level of 75-80. For maximum safety, it's best to let your doctor know what you're doing. In most cases, your doctor must authorize your blood test anyway.
As people age, they synthesize less D3 through the skin and absorb
less from supplements yet need more. And many experts on Vitamin
D3 Therapy recommend taking more of the Vitamin so that enough is
available to work against Cancer. A maximum of 2,000 I.U. daily is
considered a Safe Tolerable Level (yet many experts consider it the minimum).
Vitamin D3 and Calcium are really dirt cheap and a year's supply of both
can be had for $35-50.
There are3 types of Vitamin D3 supplements and two of Calcium.
Some D3 supplements are available made from fish liver oil. Some scientists object to these because they contain a significantly high level of Vitamin A (retinol) which itself reduces bone density and they may be contaminated with PCBs or mercury. However, fish oil has other health benefits. These supplements are available at most healthfood stores.
Most D3 supplements today are made from lanolin, a mixture of cholesterol and fatty acids found in sheeps' wool.
Other D3 supplements consist of pharmaceutical grade Vitamin D3 made in a lab. These are free of Vitamin A. They can be ordered On-Line from the Life Extension Foundation (www.lef.com/) and elsewhere. They are best taken after a fatty meal (or take them with half a teaspoon of peanut butter or a teaspoon of olive oil). Vitamin D3 comes in pills or capsules each containing 400 I.U. or 1,000 I.U. Since both sizes cost the same, it is always cheaper to buy the 1,000 I.U. size. D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin and can be stored in the body's fat cells.
Calcium Carbonate tablets containing 600 mgs each can be purchased in most large supermarkets for around $7 per jar of 250 tablets. Said to be no more effective but easier to swallow--and believed to be more readily absorbed--are the more expensive Calcium Citrate capsules containing 250 mgs each. Calcium is best absorbed if 500-600 mgs is taken in the morning and the same amount in the evening.

New Study Reveals That Vitamin
D May Boost
Survival Odds From Colon Cancer
By 48 Percent
Supporting all that's been said about Vitamin D Therapy so far, a new study released in June 2008 revealed that Colon Cancer patients with high blood levels of Vitamin D may boost their survival odds by 48 percent. According to Dr. Kimmie Ng, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and the study's lead researcher, Vitamin D3 may improve survival in Colon Cancer patients by slowing the growth of tumor cells. It may also be involved in killing malignant cells and inhibiting the growth of blood vessels in tumors. The study was documented in the June 20, 2008 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
In the study, Ng's team used data from 304 patients diagnosed with Colon Cancer from either the Nurses Health Study or the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The researchers found that patients with the highest levels of Vitamin D were 48 percent less likely to die from Colon Cancer, or any other cause, compared with those who had the lowest levels.
(Our comment: Colon Cancer has many similarities to Breast and Prostate
Cancer and it seems quite probable that Prostate Cancer patients might
experience similar benefits to those reported in the study.)
STEP 3: EXERCISE THERAPY--More Effective Than Many Drugs
Daily exercise--or just plain physical activity--is the most powerful health-promoting therapy in existance. It works on the Whole Person simultaneously, swiftly bringing a host of health-enhancing benefits to both Body and Mind.
After 30 minutes of brisk walking, for example, any downer feelings of pessimism, pain, depression or hopelessness are likely to be replaced by a "feel-good" mood of optimism, confidence, and hope. A brisk 30-minutes walk or swim, or any similar rythmic exercise, should leave you feeling great for the rest of the day.
This exuberant mood unlocks psychological benefits on every level of the human mind. It helps defuse the stress of modern living. And it helps to produce healthy outcomes, faster healing, swifter recovery from surgery, and a more powerful immune system to fight off infections and reduce the risk of co-morbidity, which could complicate the treatment of Prostate Cancer.
Writing in the E-Book "A 21st Approach to Prostate Cancer,"the British scientist A.G. Bates comments:" The wider context of an overall strategy to combat Prostate Cancer has to include physical exercise. Physical exercise has shown itself to be protective across a wide spectrum of disease and is particularly relevent for battling Prostate Cancer. Exercise enhances androgen production and androgen forms the basis for anabolic (body building) chemicals.
Exercise will cause muscle growth as an adaption to increased physical stresses on the body. In its turn, increased muscle growth triggers increased androgen production to maintain the new level of muscularity. This is a natural feedback loop employed by smart body builders ; they do not need nandrolone injections since their own bodies produce natural androgen. Just as you never hear of a young man with high levels of natural androgen being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, so you will never hear of older men who have maintained high androgen levels throughout their lives by body building, succumb to Prostate Cancer." Anther strong benefit of exercise--especially strength-building and balancing exercises--is that they help to prevent older people from falling. Out of every six hip fractures, five are caused by falls. Use exercise to lower your chance of falling, and you can dramatically cut the risk of fracturing your hip (or wrist or other bone). In fact, strength-building exercise lowers the risk of fracturing your hip more than does taking a bisphosphonate drug--and at much lower cost. You also eliminate the risk to your kidneys that taking these drugs may involve.
Exercising regularly also significantly lowers your risk of becoming overweight or obese. Being obese appears to increase the chance that a man with Prostate Cancer will die from it, according to two recent studies in the journal "Cancer."
In the National Cancer Institute Study, men with PC who were mildly obese had a 46% higher risk of dying from it within 5 years than those with normal weight , and very obese men were twice as likely to die from PC. The second study, from the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, found that obesity triples the likelihood that PC will spread. Numerous other studies have linked obesity with progression of Prostate Cancer.

Although a trifle technical, this report describes the numerous
benefits that accrued to a 155-man group, all with Advanced Prostate Cancer,
who followed a 12-weeks program of strength-building exercise compared
to a similar-sized control group who did not exercise. The exercisers
reported a significent reduction in fatigue and a higher quality of life
plus increased muscular fitness and a marked decrease in side effects from
medication.
Simultaneously, Duke University's August 2008 Duke Medicine Newsletter
came out with an exciting story headlined, "Exercise Improves Cancer Survival
Rates in Men" that described how Walking or Cycling for at least 30 Minutes
a Day May Increase Your Chance of Surviving Cancer by 33 percent.
It is becoming increasingly clear that Exercise is rapidly emerging as
an Essential Part of Treatment for a Variety of Cancers, especially Advanced
Prostate Cancer. And Exercise Treatment should include both
aerobic and strength-building exercise.
STEP 4: NUTRITION THERAPY--Foods That Grow On Plants May Help Cancer Treatment
The time for a diet to prevent Cancer may be in the very early stages of the disease when an antioxidant-rich diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes may have some effect. But diets designed to slow the growth of PC or APC have shown mixed results. Recent advisories, however, recommend that foods containing a generous amount of lycopene--a deep red colored nutrient (found in ketchup, or in tomato and pasta sauce cooked in olive oil)--may help slow the growth of aggressive and late-stage Prostate Cancer tumors, especially in older men. About 4 tablespoons of red sauce should be stirred into a dish of cooked brown rice (or similar whole grain) to which brocoli and other multi-colored vegetables can be added.
But when it comes to preventing co-morbidity--that is, developing another disease like heart disease, hypertension or Type-2 diabetes that can seriously complicate medical treatment for PC or APC--foods that grow on plants play a key role. These chronic diseases can easily be prevented, or even reversed, by a combination of daily exercise and a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Occasional servings of canned sardines packed in olive oil, tomato sauce or water (but not other cooking oils) can be added along with canned or fresh Alaskan salmon (canned Alaskan salmon is quite cheap). .
Constipation is another unpleasant side effect of most medications for PC and APC. But a diet, like the one just described for preventing co-morbidity, is also packed with fiber that can work wonders in helping to maintain regularity. Coupled with a daily exercise program, it should make laxatives almost unnecessary. Adding a generous serving of canned Pork & Beans (Baked Beans) to your luncheon salad and also to dinner, is another powerful preventer of constipation (Vegetarian Baked Beans are also available.) So is adding some Wheat Bran to your breakfast cereal. (Be sure to remove any white cubes of saturated fat that may be floating atop the beans when you open the can.)
By far the most health-wrecking foods in existance include bacon, burgers, ground beef or red meat--especially if grilled, processed, smoked or barbecued. That's because they're chockfull of saturated fat that clogs arteries and triggers heart attacks. Excepting non-fat varieties, milk and dairy foods also contain varying amounts of saturated fat while margarine has a high content of Trans-Fatty Acids, another proven artery blocker.
Some people also suspect that the calcium in milk and dairy products speeds the growth of PC and APC. More likely, in men who are deficient in Vitamin D3, the calcium sops up all the available D3, leaving the men even more deficient in Vitamin D3. And as you'll have read earlier in this report, a deficiency of Vitamin D3 can lead to increased risk of PC and APC. Other people suspect that cow's milk contains the growth hormone igf-1 or Insulin-Like Growth Factor Type 1, which has a molecular pattern very similar to that of human growth hormone.
An easy way to avoid these risks is to use soy milk and soy products instead of milk and dairy products. Vegetarians have a wide choice of soy products including milk, cheese, yogurt, tofu and even soy burgers, all free of saturated fats and animal protein.

Hold this picture in your "mind's eye" for as long as you can. "Feel" the sand crunch under your feet and "hear" the palm leaves rustling in the breeze. A few tiny white tufts of cloud are all that fleck the wide, blue sky. And away on the horizon you see the white sails of fishing boats.
Really FEEL and experience this thought-image for as long as you can. Chances are that, within a few minutes your spirits will lift and you'll have forgotten all about the rain outside. Continue using this imagery each time you wake up to a rainy or overcast morning.
Psychologists call this technique "Guided Imagery. " Provided you experience it intensely enough to feel a positive emotion, that should be the end of rainy day gloom and depression.
We Become What We Think About
We have total control over the thoughts in our Mind. At any moment, we can create whichever thought-image we desire. Regardless how negative our current feelings are, we can create positive thoughts that turn on positive feelings. These positive emotions then quickly squelch our negative feelings.
We can create positive thoughts about our health that turn on positive feelings that help us stay well. At any time, we can turn on the positive, joyful mood we wish to experience by first thinking positive thoughts.
This is equally effective over a longer time scale. Our energy flows to whatever we think about a lot, speak about often, and respond to with emotion. At every moment of every day, our body is being influenced by what we think about most. Our bodies are actually becoming our thoughts. Which is entirely possible when you recall that all our cells are linked to the Master Mind in the brain.

See funny plays and movies and watch slapstick videos and TV comedies that really make you laugh. For example, people who express a high level of joy mobilize approximately 50 per cent more antibodies than the average person in response to 'flu vaccines. We haven't mentioned the possibility of a remission from PC or APC until now. Though rare, a temporary remission from these cancers is entirely possible. A well documented case is that of Damon Phinney, a well-known Boulder CO cyclist, who was diagnosed with APC at age 60 in the late 1980s. But after 18 months of Hormone Therapy--during which Phinney led a very active lifestyle, bicycling over many of the highest mountain passes in the Alps and Rockies--he achieved a remission which lasted more than six years.
Whether his remission was due to drug treatment or to vigorous exercise or to an outright Optimistic mind state--or to a combination of all three--is not totally clear. But Phinney's inspiring story does illustrate that a temporary remission from PC or APC, and probably Breast Cancer, is entirely possible. Some physicians have suggested that mentioning the possibility of a remission from non-medical sources like Exercise and Mind-Body Therapy is raising false hopes. But other experts, like Herbert Benson, M.D., of Harvard Medical School, claim there is no such thing as false hope.
If after trying stents and the newest drugs, your doctor tells you,"There's nothing more that modern medicine can do for you," he is probably correct. But that doesn't include the powerful benefits of vigorous Exercise, Vitamin D Therapy, and Mind-Body Therapy.

Optimism Booster #2 : Transform Stress Into Joy With Mindfulness
Meditation, or Mindfulness as it's often called today, lets you brush away the turbulent thoughts and emotions that may be racing through your mind and reach a mind-state so calm that you can freely think any thought that you wish. Or you can enter a deep state of silence by ceasing to think any thoughts at all. Mindfulness puts you in full control of your thoughts and your emotions which is exactly like being in full control of your Mind and your Health.
All this sounds pretty Subjective. But is it really true?
Well, try it for yourself. Follow the instructions in the simple visualization below and in a few minutes you should be in a state of deep meditation, entirely free of any negative thoughts or emotions.
To begin, go to a quiet room where you will not be disturbed, turn off the phone and sit in a comfortable chair. Relax and take a slow, deep breath, filling the lower part of your lungs first and the upper part last. Hold for 3 seconds then slowly exhale. Repeat slowly four more times--for a total of five slow, deep breaths--all the while focusing your attention on your breath By now, you should already be relaxed , your blood pressure should have fallen, and your pulse rate will have noticeably slowed.
Continue to breathe in a relaxed manner while you visualize the following scene.
Picture yourself in a beautiful garden full of flowers and shrubs. You are standing at the top of a wide, marble stairway. Twelve steps lead down to a deep, transparent spring. So clear is the water that every detail is visible on the white, sandy bottom fifty feet below.
In your mind, picture yourself descending the steps. As you take the first step down, begin to count silently backwards from twelve. At the second step, silently say eleven. Count on down backwards as you descend the remaining steps. At the count of Zero, you should be standing beside the spring.
Next, see yourself tossing a shiny, new dime into the clear spring. Watch the coin glide, flash, turn and dart as it slides, twists and rolls its way down and down, deeper and deeper into the silent depths of the spring. In about a minute, the dime comes to rest on the white, sandy bottom.
You are now in the deepest part of the spring, completely isolated from noise, deadlines, problems and pressures. Here, far from freeways and telephones, all is completely calm, tranquil, still and relaxed.
Silently tell yourself," My mind and body are deeply relaxed. My mind is silent and still. Whether positive or negative, I'm totally free of all thoughts and emotions, especially those that might harm my health."
Though you can't live in a state of meditation, the more you meditate, the closer you come to living in a state of Mindfulness. What that means is paying attention and being here and now all of the time. No longer can your mind run on automatic pilot while you daydream and let your mind drift.

Knowing this, we can create a series of clear, strong goals that we can look forward to achieving. Despite having incurable Cancer, setting goals enhances our meaning and purpose for living. Many men with APC are still able to take a cruise, and at least a fourth can still play 18-holes of golf with the aid of a cart.
For maximum benefit, our goals should be varied and should include goals for physical activity, mental activity, cultivating positive emotions, and enhancing our career and personal growth. The goals we choose should make maximum use of our talents and abilities. We should also have goals for fun and relaxation, strengthening relationships and family ties, developing love and romance, and widening social contacts.
Consider, for example, having three or more goals to be achieved within six weeks, three more to be achieved within six months, and three or more to be achieved within six years. Our short-term goals might be to stop smoking within twelve days; to begin an exercise program within twenty-one days; and to learn to dance within thirty days.
Our inter-mediate goals might include to lose twelve pounds within six months; to enrol in the first available class in public speaking; and to spend our fall vacation bicycling through New England. Our long-term goals might be to live to be 90; to move to a small town within three years; and to become a freelance writer.
Never Be Without Strong and Achievable Goals
As soon as one goal is achieved, replace it with another. "Without goals, there is no reason to get up in the morning," a spry nonegarian told me," Without goals, our will to live begins to falter. " Each goal should state a definite objective and timetable.
It's important to select goals that, in view of our health, are clearly attainable. Don't waste time setting impossible goals. Set a goal for something you can achieve within a certain period of time. To get started, think of several small successes, each of which you could attain in fifteen minutes. Then think of several, each of which you could achieve in an hour. And perhaps a couple, each of which you could complete in a day.

Optimism Booster # 4: The Incredible Healing Power Of Therapeutic Imagery
Can you visualize?
Make a mental picture of a dog in your mind and hold it for 20 seconds. If you can do this successfully, the answer is Yes. Almost all of us can visualize and most of us are very good at it. Every thought is actually a thought-image and when we visualize we are focusing on the image part of a thought that already exists in our Minds. Visualize a motor cycle and that mind-picture has to be preceded by a very brief, momentary thought about a motor cycle.
Since we have direct control of our thoughts at any time, this means we also have direct control of our feelings, including the feelings that tell our immune system what we want it to do.
Because functions of our immune-system can be easily observed and measured, most research on Visualization Therapy has been carried out on our immune systems, a complex system of cells that defends the body against infections and other diseases.
The ability to make mental images allows us to communicate directly with our immune-system. That's because our immune-system "speaks" in images and it communicates through feelings. Start feeling good, and in a minute or so, molecular messengers called Neuropeptides begin conveying that feeling to billions of cells in your immune system. At the same time, hormones carry similar information to every cell and organ in your body.
When we feel cheerful and positive, Neuropeptides carry this message to every cell in the immune-system and our entire immune-system becomes stronger and more vigorous. When we feel anxious and depressed, these feelings are swiftly relayed to the immune-system which responds by losing vigor and strength.
By using the language of imagery, visualization provides us with direct sensory access to our immune-system. We can create images in our minds that are blueprints, telling our immune system what we want it to do.
For example, visualization is quite effective in mobilizing the immune system to make warts disappear. Dermatologists freeze warts with liquid nitrogen. Even then, some may be difficult to remove. But warts are caused by a virus. By regularly creating a mental blueprint showing that your wart has already disappeared, you can often make a stubborn wart vanish in a couple of weeks. (Lesser warts may disappear in a few days.)
One study involved people with Rheumatoid Arthritis that was believed caused when overactive immune-system cells called Neutrophils attacked the lining of joints in the knee, wrist and elbow. To slow the neutrophil activity, participants visualized their neutrophils as ping-pong balls covered with honey. These sticky "neutrophils" then adhered to everything they touched and they were inactivated. This prevented them from attacking joint linings and causing Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The result? Blood tests showed that participants who regularly practiced this imagery were selectively able to increase the stickiness of the real neutrophil cells in their immune-systems.
A quick word here: don't expect Visualization to cure Cancer. When it comes to Cancer, Visualization works well as a Complementary Therapy to regular medical treatment for Cancer. It can be employed in a variety of ways to enhance the effect of medical treatment on the patient's outcome and survival. But it is not a substitute for essential medical treatment.
Nonetheless, it can be a huge help in beating diseases like Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and similar ailments that are easily reversed by changing to a healthier lifestyle and diet.
Visualization, aka Guided Imagery, has a long history of proven success. It was originally used by sports psychologists to train athletes for world class sports events. Visualize Only Goals You Can Achieve On Your Own
To achieve a visualized goal, that goal must be thoroughly feasible and it must be attainable without the help of another person. For example, if you're 95 years old, it may not be feasible to expect to live another 15 years. And regardless of age, it is not feasible to visualize yourself becoming president of the United States or even a celebrity. But it is feasible to visualize yourself becoming more slender and fit.
When Visualization is used to promote health and healing, we call it Therapeutic Imagery. It works in exactly the same way as when you rehearse an athletic routine. In your Mind, you see yourself as already healed and healthy. Then you reinforce your imagery with silent but strongly positive verbal images and phrases.
Total Immersion Through Therapeutic Imagery
By communicating in symbol language with the right brain and in silent verbal language with the left brain, you create an inner dialog that by-passes your conscious mind and saturates the subconscious with messages about how you feel.
Since the subconscious uncritically accepts all images and suggestions that we make, it communicates our feelings to the immune-system and also to every cell in every nerve, gland, muscle and organ in the body. Powerful inner forces then work subliminally to transform the goals we have visualized into physical reality.
Therapeutic Imagery clearly and definitely can boost immuno-competence. That means it can help your immune-system overcome many types of infectious disease. Therapeutic Imagery is even more successful when we use it to help change behaviours that are detrimental to the competence of our immunity.
For example, exercise definitely helps invigorate immunity. But if you lack the motivation to take a brisk daily walk, you can empower yourself to begin a walking program by visualizing yourself enjoying a pleasant walk each day.
Using Therapeutic Imagery
Call it self-hypnosis, but the Mind will automatically carry out whatever instructions we give it while we're relaxed and using mental imagery. The reason is that what we "see" in our Minds and what we "say" to ourselves, is almost always what we "get."
In pain clinics, where it is often used to reduce pain, therapeutic
imagery is often referred to as Relaxation Visualization. Visualization
works best when we're deeply relaxed. A quick way to relax the Mind
(and body) is the dime and spring visualization described in Technique
# 2 "Transform Stress Into Joy With Mindfulness"
After practicing it a few times, you should easily be able to enter
a state of deep relaxation in two minutes or less.
When you relax the Mind, you automatically relax the body and you enter a state of focused awareness. Rather than wander from thought to thought, your Mind becomes completely absorbed in your imagery and suggestions. All other thoughts are excluded.
Once relaxed, you simply begin making mental pictures of whatever you wish to achieve while you reinforce these images with silent verbal suggestions. Often, imagery alone may accomplish your goal and verbal suggestions may not be necessary.
Portray Your Goal As Already Accomplished
However you choose to employ therapeutic imagery, use images and suggestions that portray your goal as already accomplished. To motivate yourself to walk 3 brisk miles each day, visualize yourself as already walking those 3 miles and use suggestions that reinforce this goal.
To help recover from an infection, use images and suggestions that show the infection as already healed and gone. Do this, even though you still have the infection. Phrase and visualize everything you wish to happen as though it were already accomplished.
No, it's not denial. Visualizing yourself free of an infection or disease is not the same as denying you have it. Instead, Therapeutic Imagery merely supplies your body-mind with a blueprint to recovery.
Make Your Images Vivid and Graphic
Try to use scenes and symbols that bring alive your positive feelings.
Suppose you have an infection in your ankle that prevents you from walking. One of the most powerful visualizations you can use is to picture yourself in perfect health with a trim, athletic build walking briskly along a beach without a single ache or pain in your body. As you "see" yourself walking, use your imagination to "experience" sensory impressions that reinforce the emotional content of your images.
Mentally "experience" how good it feels to be lean, light and flexible and free of the infection in your ankle. As you "see" yourself striding along the beach , mentally "feel" the grains of sand under your toes, "smell" the tang of salt in the air, and "hear" the screech of gulls as they wheel overhead.
For example, when I visualize myself working out with weights, I "see" myself lifting a barbell at least ten pounds heavier than any I have lifted in real life. As I do this, I "hear"the clink of barbells and weights. And when I picture myself swimming faster than I ever have in reality, I "hear" the hiss of water surging past my ear.
If you work out on strength-training machines in a gym, you can still
"experience" similar sounds and feelings. Involving all your senses
in your imagery brings you mental pictures alive, and in the process it
makes your visualization far stronger and more effective.
Use Strongly Positive Images And Suggestions
Your silent verbal suggestions should be strongly positive. Use the present tense and speak as though your goal were already achieved. Telling yourself "My immune system will be stronger tomorrow" sounds weak compared with," My immune system is powerful, vigorous, strong and aggressive."
Likewise, telling yourself,"My entire body is deeply relaxed" is far more effective than saying,"I will never feel tense again."
Avoid suggestions that begin with"I would like to ---";"I won't ---"; or" I don't ---." It's far more effective to say,"I am walking three brisk miles each day" than "I would like to walk three miles each day."
Choose phrases that express feelings and endeavor to experience these feelings as you continue making images. Telling yourself "I am happy and delighted to be walking half an hour each day" allows you to "experience" these strongly positive feelings as you continue to visualize yourself walking each day.
Similarly, telling yourself "Becoming a non-smoker has made me really proud of myself" empowers this suggestion with strongly positive feelings. You will find this is true, even though you may not yet have quit smoking.
Repeat each phrase at least four times during each imagery session. Say it slowly, silently and clearly. Repeat each suggestion with enthusiasm and anticipation and avoid being hesitant or reticent.
Ending Your Visualization Session
As you wind up your imagery session, experience gratitude that the goal of your imagery has been achieved. For instance, if you are visualizing your immune system attacking bacteria that are causing an infection in your right elbow, experience gratitude that your inner healing powers have helped to overcome the infection. Do this, even though in reality you are still suffering from the infection.
And do recall that Mind-Body Therapy is not a substitute for necessary medical treatment. It simply complements medical treatment that--in the case of most Cancers and many infections-- may be essential.
So really FEEL grateful and thankful as you repeat such phrases as "I feel pleasure, health, comfort and happiness in my right elbow. I am happy, delighted and thankful that my immune system has subdued the infection."
Finally, congratulate yourself for having taken a completely active
step in your own recovery. Tell yourself," I feel terrific, optimistic,
cheerful and filled with energy and hope. As I think, feel, say,
believe and visualize, so I become. What I 'see' is what I get.
Every day in every way I'm getting better and better. " These are
vital steps in making the visualization process work and for invoking your
inner healing-regeneration powers.
Technique #5 : Forgiveness May Save Your Life
Unforgiveness is a stressful state, a bitter mixture of anger, hostility, fear, vengeance, resentment, jealousy and hatred that sends blood pressure soaring, suppresses the immune system, and almost certainly worsens hormone-related diseases like Breast and Prostate Cancer.
People who nurse a grudge, or keep track of slights, have higher levels of stress hormones and invariably suffer from a weakened immune system.
"If you spend your life seeking revenge, first dig two graves," quotes Edward M. Hallowel, Harvard psychiatrist and author of "Dare to Forgive." Persistent unforgiveness almost always works to the detriment of health.
So what is the solution? Can unforgiveness be cured? Yes, unforgiveness can be totally cured, usually in just a few days. Not by a drug! But by a simple Do-It-Yourself Body-Mind technique called "Forgiveness."

The Only Thing New is the Science to Back it Up
The idea that your emotions impact your health and the development of disease is not new. Even the conservative Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that 85 percent of all diseases appear to have an emotional element, but that the actual percentage is likely to be even higher.
Dr Hamer's research, which spans the last three decades, has
produced scientific proof indicating that your current health status is
due to your mental and emotional reactions to events that take place during
your lifetime.
Bruce Lipton's "New Biology" is another school of scientific thought
that adds to this "new" way of thinking about disease.
Like I said. These ideas are not really new.
Bruce Lipton, much like Dr. Hamer, has also been at it for more than 20 years. The only thing "new" here is the fact that they are finally able to provide overwhelming, and in many cases indisputable scientific proof of HOW it actually works - even down to the cellular level.
As it turns out, this is not a popular truth.
People are not embracing these facts with open arms, jumping for joy at being told, "You are completely in charge of your health!" For most, it's a frightening proposition, despite its promise of ultimate freedom.
Additionally, removing an ingrained medical dogma is difficult, takes
time, and
comes at a price for those who are willing to advocate it.
Dr.Hamer has already
served time in prison for refusing to disavow his medical findings,

Things May Not Be What They Seem
German New Medicine (GNM), as explained in part in this video, operates under the premise that every disease, . originates from an unexpected shock experience. This experience does not necessarily have to appear traumatic to others. However, it's simply shocking and unexpected to you. Someone else may not react or deal with it the same way when put in a similar situation.
According to GNM, the resolution phase-- the healing phase -- is as long as the trauma phase, which is why you are recommended to always deal with your emotional trauma as swiftly as possible. The faster you resolve your trauma, mentally and emotionally, the faster your body can proceed through the healing phase.
Now, why is this important? You want your healing phase to be as short as possible, because GNM also claims that all "diseases" are in fact your body going through the resolution phase, meaning what appears to be a disease is in fact your body healing itself.
Serious trouble can arise if your trauma phase was quite extended, as your body will need the equal amount of time to heal -- which will appear as a "disease"-- as it took for the initial damage to take place.
New Solutions For Old Problems
If your emotions play such a significant role in your health, and I'm convinced they do, treating your emotions becomes an essential part of optimal health.
But how?
Learning how to use energy psychology tools, such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), for example, which works on several levels of your collective mind-body-spirit simultaneously, can help you get a better handle on your emotions and buried pain, including the stress from unexpected tragedies.
Optimal health might really hinge on dealing with, and resolving
